Tristan J. Rimmer was unremarkable.

“a scientist” pretty much summed him up.

His career to that point was hardly noteworthy, let alone remarkable and nothing he had done had made any real difference in the academic world.

Graduating 18th in his class at a second rate university, and working as a geneticist for small pharmaceutical company.

Forty years old and living in a cramped two bedroom apartment in Chicago.

No wife, no children and few, if any, real friends. That was until he was approached by the company.

When a recruiter flew him to a private island off Ecuador and showed him a state-of-the-art underground lab, he took the escape he’d been craving.

The company — Trading Alliance Limited (T.A.L.) — was a front. Its real funding came from Sector 3, a black-market biological research division that trafficked people and skirted every ethical and legal safeguard. For a year Tristan willingly performed illicit work: animal testing, cloning, narcotics synthesis, even weapons research. Then his conscience caught up with him.

Promoted two weeks ago and shown Sector 3’s most classified program, Tristan learned the full horror. The lab abducted vulnerable migrants and refugees, turning them into human guinea pigs for illegal genetic and pharmaceutical experiments.

The latest discovery was worse: a chemical formula that, when combined with human DNA, produced a combat drug capable of superhuman endurance, strength, and regenerative ability. Troops treated with it could run for days, fight for weeks, and survive wounds that would kill an ordinary person.

The first human trials—four victims from a developing country—were so monstrous Tristan vowed to quit.

His boss made that impossible. A five-year contract and millions of dollars were only the bait; those who tried to leave simply disappeared.

With his life hanging by a thread, Tristan hatches one desperate plan: sabotage the reactor that powers the lab’s security systems, break to the surface, and send an improvised distress email to the U.S. embassy on the mainland,  with his location, a confession, and testimony against Sector 3.

If he succeeds, he must then hide on the island long enough for rescuers to arrive—if they come at all.

Will he get a signal out in time?

Will help arrive before he becomes the next experiment?
